The police in Airdrie say the victim of a fatal shooting and the man charged in his death were neighbours on the same street Canal Close in the Canals neighbourhood of Airdrie.

Corporal Gina Slaney of the RCMP says the victim is 57-year-old Daniel Macdonald.

"People in the surrounding area of where this murder took place are pulling together and showing support for one another. There is no need to feel any fear at this point," Slaney told CBC. "These two men were known to each other so it wasn't just a random act."

Michael Roebuck, 59, is charged with first degree murder.

At approximately 5 p.m. on Saturday, RCMP responded to a report of shots fired in the Canalsneighbourhood.

Upon police arrival, an injured male was located outside of a residence and pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Police say Roebuckhas been remanded into custody and will be appearing in Airdrie Provincial court on September 19.

The RCMP are asking anyone with information about the incident to call 403-945-7200, or Crime Stoppers.
