Alberta flood spending watchdogs promise 'full wrath'

A team of auditors from the province is investigating how flood relief money has been spent.

This summer, Auditor General Merwan Saher announced he would take a look at flood spending.

On Monday night, some of his staff showed up at a flood information meeting in Calgary to ask provincial government employees about the kind of spending their departments made after the flood.

In July and August, the Alberta government spent $148 million on flood relief.

"I think they're going to find the money was well spent. That it got out very quickly," said Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs Doug Griffiths.

He said he welcomes the audit, noting that the pre-loaded debit cards given to flood victims might be an area of concern.

"If it turns out they weren't in the floodway and didn't need the cards, God help them because they're going to have the full wrath of Alberta taxpayers and this government after them," Griffiths said.
