Victims of fatal crash on Trans-Canada west of Calgary were from B.C., RCMP says

Mounties have released more information about the identities of the motorists involved in a fatal head-on collision on Highway 1 west of Calgary earlier in the week.

Mounties have released more information about the identities of the motorists involved in a fatal head-on collision on Highway 1 west of Calgary earlier in the week.

Two people were killed in the multi-vehicle crash on Wednesday that happened west of the Morley turnoff.

According to RCMP, a cube van was travelling eastbound on Highway 1 west of Morley Road when it veered through the median and into the westbound lanes.

The eastbound van collided head-on with a white car, RCMP said.

At the same time, a westbound semi-trailer was unable to avoid the collision and rear-ended the white car.The two people in the car died at the scene.

With next of kin having been notified, RCMP said on Friday that the victims were a 78-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman, both from the Columbia Valley, in southeastern B.C.

Following the initial collisions, a westbound cube van hit the semi-trailer, RCMP said.

Three people were taken by ground ambulances to the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, said Alberta EMS spokesperson Adam Loria.

The three patients were the driver and passenger of the eastbound cube vanand the driver of the westbound cube van, RCMP said.

The eastbound cube van was driven by a 50-year-old man from Sherwood Park, Alta., and the passenger was a 27-year-old man from Winnipeg.

The semi-truck driver was a 55-year-old man from Calgary.
