Road rage complaint results in arrest of Calgary man, seizure of almost 50 guns

RCMP seized almost 50 guns from the vehicle and home of a Calgary man who allegedly flashed a handgun during a road rage incident earlier this month.

RCMP seized almost 50 guns from the vehicle and home of a Calgary man who allegedly flashed a handgun during a road rage incident earlier this month.

Strathmore RCMP said Friday it responded Sept. 10 to reports of an incident east of Calgary on Highway 1.

The suspect's vehicle was spotted on Highway 1 near Range Road 270. RCMP arrested two men inside after initiating a high-risk traffic stop.

RCMP said they searched the vehicle and found a loaded 9-mm handgun under the driver's seat and a 12-gauge shotgun with ammunition behind the back seat.

The passenger was released at the scene. The driver, a 51-year-old Calgary man,was taken into custody.

RCMP said a database search revealed other firearms were registered to him.

"Given the erratic and dangerous behaviour in this incident, a public safety warrant was obtained to search the suspect's home to seize any remaining firearms until this matter could heard by the courts," RCMP said.

Search of home yields firearms

The suspect's Calgary home was searched by Mounties and the Calgary Police Service, who found ammunition and unsafely stored firearms that included:

  • 1 AR-15.
  • 22 long guns (shotguns, rifles, air riflesand an M1 carbine).
  • 20revolvers and semi-automatic handguns.
  • 4 airsoft replica handguns.

RCMP said a total of 49 firearms were seized 12 were classified as restricted, 10 were classified as prohibited.

"Anumber of prohibited devices such as magazines capable of holding more than the permitted number of rounds were seized," RCMP said.

"The majority of restricted or prohibited firearms were not registered."

The suspect was held for a bail hearing on charges of:

  • Pointing a firearm.
  • Using a firearm in the commission of an offence.
  • Unsafe storage of a firearm.
  • Carrying a concealed weapon.
  • Possession of a prohibited weapon knowing it's unauthorized.
  • Unauthorized possession of a prohibited device.

He has been released on conditions to appear in court.

RCMP said that after the search of his home, additional charges are expected.
