Alberta group demands plebiscite on carbon tax

The Alberta group that recently organized rallies against the provincial carbon tax ishoping to get at least 500,000 signatures on its petitiondemanding a plebiscite on the carbon tax issue.

The Alberta Wide Rally movement, which calls itself a grassroots organization, held about adozen rallies throughout the province earlier this month.

ToddBeasley, Alberta Wide Rally's managing director, calls the carbon tax "an economy killer."

The NDP say the taxis a way to fight climate change and reduce the province's carbon footprint.

Beasley told the Calgary Eyeopeneron Monday the government does not have a mandate to implement the tax.

"Most certainly in Alberta, Rachel Notley did not go to the people and say, 'This is what we are going to do', moreover 'This is the economic cost of it,'" said Beasley.

The Alberta Wide Rallyhopes to submitthe petition to the legislature within the next couple of months.

"Our goal is to secure 500,000 signatures of support in a petition, asking the Alberta Provincial Legislative Assembly to urge the provincial government to hold a plebiscite/referendum/vote, in support or opposition to the Alberta Provincial Governments Bill 20, the 'Climate Leadership Plan,'" the group says on its website.
