Drugs, guns and cash seized in police sting near Medicine Hat

Eight people are under arrest in connection with a police investigation in southeastern Alberta in which drugs, guns and cash were seized.

Eight people are under arrest, and three are already facing charges, in connection with a police investigation in southeastern Alberta in which drugs, guns and cash were seized.

The sting by the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) began in late October and wrapped up on Nov. 8, when police seized two firearms, ammunition, cocaine, and methamphetamineduring the execution of two search warrants one at a residencein Tilley, Alta., and the other in Medicine Hat.

ALERT seized a 44-caliber handgun, a 22-caliber rifle and various rounds of ammunition, in addition to 57 grams of meth, 14 grams of cocaine, 35 cartons of contraband cigarettes, and $3,550 in cash.

Police also seized a number of katanas a type of sword and knives.

Three people have been charged with a number of offences, including possession for the purpose of trafficking, unauthorizedpossession of a firearm, and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

"The suspected drug trafficking of these individuals had a negative impact across multiple communities in the region," said Staff Sgt. Cory Both with the Medicine Hat Organized Crime and Gangs unit.

"Methamphetamine has been a significant concern in our community and we are committed to working with our partner agencies to disrupt its illicit sale," he added.

The other five have yet to be formally charged.
