Alberta's policing watchdog is investigating after a man was killed by police in southeast Calgary on Saturday afternoon.

Calgary police said they were called to the area of 45th Street and 17th Avenue S.E. shortly after 3:40 p.m. for reports of a man who was believed to be in possession of weapons.

Police said witnesses reported the man had assaulted a bystander and threatened others.

Officers located the man who was still in possession of the weapons and attempted to negotiate peacefully, police said.

"Despite their de-escalation efforts, the man's action led to officers discharging their service weapons," police said in a release. "Life-saving efforts were attempted, however, the man was pronounced deceased at the scene."

A police dog was seriously injured by the suspect, according to police, but is currently stable.

No other details will be released while the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team investigates the incident.

On Sunday, Calgary's Sudanese community gathered at the scene of the incident to mourn the man who was killed, who they identified asLatjor Tuel.
