ASIRT to investigate after Macleod Trail chase ends in injury

Two people are facing charges after a lengthy car chase through the city on Tuesday night.

Police helicopter tracked stolen vehicle as it sped south, running red lights and ramming police cars

Two people are facing charges after a lengthy car chase through the city on Tuesday night.

Police were called about a suspicious vehicle near the Calgary Drop-In Centre on Fifth Avenue S.E. at about 8:30 p.m. MT.

It turned out to bestolen. When officers tried to block the vehicle, the driver rammed the police cruisers and got away, police said.

The driver took off, speeding south down Macleod Trail with a police helicopter chasing overhead.

The vehicle stopped to let one passenger out, who was arrested.

The driver continued down Macleod Trail, getting T-boned by a truck at 162nd Avenue after running a red light, police said.

He continued out of the city where RCMP picked up the chase.

Police finally used a spike belt to stop the vehicle. A police dog subdued the driver near High River.

He was taken tohospital with serious injuries.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT)announced Wednesday it would investigate whether police acted appropriately.

ASIRTis called in to investigate incidents involving Alberta police that cause serious injury or death to civilians.

Charges are pending against the driver, police said.
