Teen accused of attacking grandmother with sword ordered to see psychiatrist

A teenager accused of attacking his grandmother with a sword in Bragg Creek last week has been ordered to see a court-appointed psychiatrist.

A teenager accused of attacking his grandmother with a sword appeared in Cochrane, Alta.,court Tuesday and was ordered by a judge to see a court-appointed psychiatrist.

Marshall Rath, 19, is charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

He is set to see the psychiatrist on Wednesday in Calgary. The doctor will then advise the court whether Rath should undergo a 30-day psychiatric assessment before the proceedings continue.

The victim is a79-year-old woman who lives with Rath. Neighbours have told CBC News she is his grandmother.

Police were called to the Bragg Creek home around 12:45 a.m. Friday.

The woman was in life-threatening condition when officersarrived at the residence,but they were able to stabilize her and she was taken to hospital, where she remains in serious condition.
