A snowshoer was killed in an avalanche in Kananaskis Country west of Calgary on the weekend, officials say.

The accident happened on Sunday on the north face of Tent Ridge, which is about 40 kilometres south of Canmore along the Smith Dorrien Trail, Avalanche Canada says on its website.

After an air search crew located an avalanche debris field on Monday morning, searchers on the ground found a man completely buried, Canmore RCMP said in a release.

The 55-year-old Canmoreman was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim, who was alone, was not wearing a transceiver.

A report posted on Facebook by the Kananaskis Country Public Safety Section says there was no previous avalanche activity in that area this season and it's believed this slide was human-triggered.
