Night of partying led to Bankview homicide, say Calgary police

A Calgary man of no fixed address is facing charges after a 58-year-old man was found dead in a Bankview apartment earlier in the week.

Police were called to an apartment in the 1800 block of 17th Street S.W. Tuesday afternoon after a man walked into a fire hall and told crews he thought his roommate was dead.

An autopsy on Wednesday determined Richard Pember's death was a homicide.

On Thursday, police said they wanted to speak with Zachery Frederick Rider, 36, as a person of interest.

Rider was located Friday and has been charged with second-degree murder, assault and assault with a weapon involving a second victim at the same location.

The assault charges relate to an attack on the roommate who reported Pember's death, said homicide Staff Sgt. Michael Cavilla.

"He sustained some major injuries, but nothing life threatening," he said.

The three men were friends and Pember lived in the transitional housing complex, said Cavilla. Police believe he was killed after a night of partying.

"We believe Mr. Pember died in the early morning hours of Tuesday Nov. 22, there was an altercation of some sort in the residence and a fight ensued," he said.

"There was a party at this residence with three individuals involving alcohol and at some point during the evening, things got out of hand."

Police say they are not looking for any other suspects in the case, but the investigation continues.

Rider has a court appearance scheduled for Monday.
