A Calgary manremains in hospital in critical life-threatening condition after he was attacked in the Beltline area late Wednesday night.

He was assaulted in the middle of the road in the 1500 block of Sixth Street S.W., police said.

Policethink it was a random attack. The man was carrying groceries when policebelieve three people beat him up.

The homicide unit has been called in because of the seriousness of the assault.

"It is concerning to see somebody beatenthis severely and we are taking this investigation very seriously," said Staff Sgt. Mike Power.

No one is in custody but investigators are interviewing several witnesses, officials said.

Investigators would also like to talk to the victim when he wakes up.

Policesay there isno motive at this point, but stress the public should not be worried.
