Billy Ly charged with conspiring to kill B.C.'s Bacon brothers

A Calgary gangster has been arrested and charged in connection with a plot to kill brothers from a rival gang in British Columbia that left an innocent man dead in a case of mistaken identity.

Billy Ly, 31, now faces conspiracy to commit murder charges, accused of plottingto kill the notorious B.C. Bacon brothers who led the Red Scorpion gang. Troy Tran, 32, faces the same charge.

Ly, an FK gang affiliate, goes to trial in Calgarynext week on an attempted murder charge, accused of stabbing rival FOB gang memberNick Chan in 2013. He had been out on bail until his arrest this weekend.

"The timing is really suspect," said Ly's lawyer, Hersh Wolch. "His trial starts a week today."

Wolch says police executed a search warrant on Ly'shome, as well as the homes of hisgirlfriend and parents.

Chan the alleged leader of the FOB gang is in custody awaiting trial on several charges, including murder, related to the gang war in Calgary between 2002 and2009 that left more than two dozen dead.

The Bacon brothers

Five other men already pleaded guilty in 2013 to conspiring to kill the three Bacon brothersand their associatesin 2008 and 2009, at the height ofthe gang war in Vancouver and theFraser Valley.

Jonathan Bacon died in Aug. 2011 after being shot outside aKelownahotel.

Jamie Bacon is in custody on a first-degree murder charge, awaiting trial in connection withthe slaying of six people, including two innocent bystanders in a Surrey high-rise in 2007.

His brother, Jarrod, was sentenced to 14years in prison in 2012 for conspiracy to traffic cocaine, but the court of appeal added two years to the charge.

Jonathan Barber, a stereo installer, was killed in May, 2008 in a case of mistaken identity when he drove Jamie Bacon's Porsche down a Burnaby street.

Ly was arrested by Vancouver police in Calgary on Friday and appeared in a B.C. courtroom on Monday. Calgary authorities are seeking a judge's order to have himsent back beforehis trial on Monday.

Calgary police are expected to comment on the arrest on Tuesday.
