This Calgary road with 4 names could be getting a 5th

Some people living along Bowness Road west of Shaganappi Trail and east ofShouldiceBridgewant to add anothername to the mix one that reflects their neighbourhood of Montgomery.

'We just want to show that we're a little different from everyone else,' says community association chair

A single Calgary road with four names could be getting a fifth, as one northwest community pushes to cement its place on the map.

As you head west through the city along the north side of the Bow River, Memorial Drive becomes Parkdale Boulevard, then Third Avenue N.W.and finally turns into Bowness Road.

Some people living along theparticular stretch of roadwest of Shaganappi Trail and east ofShouldiceBridgewant to add anothername to the mix one that reflects their neighbourhood.

The community of Montgomery includes Shouldice Athletic Park and is bounded by 32nd Avenue N.W., the Bow River and Shaganappi Trail. (Google Maps)

"Just to make ourselves known, to show that we're a little different than the surrounding communities," said Janice Mackett, planning committee chair with the Montgomery Community Association.

It's part of a rebranding effort to draw attention to Montgomery as a "destination," becausemany people don't even realize they've passed through that community on the way to Bowness, according to Mackett.

"Changing the name, I think, just helps solidify a community. We're a small community, and we just want to show that we're a little different from everyone else, and we want to make sure people know where we are."

Mackett said she doesn't think adding another name would make things more confusing. If anything, changing it once more "completes the pattern," she said.

"It's called Parkdale Boulevard when you're in Parkdale. It's called Bowness Road when you're in Bowness. Why not Montgomery something when you drive through Montgomery?" asked Mackett.

Community buy-in needed

Mackett says she's still consulting with the community to gauge support for the name change, and no formal application has been submitted to the city yet.

Robert Ryan, production manager at FastSigns on Bowness Road, likes the move to distinguish the area.

'There is a difference, and so I do believe it is important to keep things branded,' says Robert Ryan, even though it can be costly to rebrand or to process an address change. (Jennifer Lee/CBC)

But owner David Brooke isn't keen on it.

"Ithink Bowness Road has a lot of historical value, and Idon't want to go ahead and have to rebrand all the letterhead," Brooke said.

If the renaming is approved with strong support from residents and businesses, the city says some of the costs could be covered through the Main Streets redevelopment project.
