Young cyclist in serious condition after collision with van

A 12-year-old boy is in serious, life-threatening condition after being struck by a van at a northeast intersection Thursday evening.

A 12-year-old boy is in serious, life-threatening condition after being struck by a van at a northeast intersection Thursday evening, paramedics said in a release.

EMS responded to the intersection of CastleridgeBoulevardand Westwinds Drive N.E. just after 6:30 p.m.

A second ambulance was called in to assist.

The youth was sent to Alberta Children's Hospital after paramedics had concerns of head injuries.

A witness tells CBC News the boy was crossing the road to get to his sisters on the other side.

Reginald Reddy witnessed the incident. He says it was horrible to see, especially as a father. (CBC)

Reginald Reddy says the driver of the van, an older man, attempted to stop.

"He tried to stop but it was too late," Reddy said.

"The boy flew about five to six metres and hit his head on the road.A lot of people tried to help."

Reddy said witnessing the incident was horrible.

"It was very shocking, as a father it was very shocking. Even I am shivering right now."

EMS says there were no other injuries at the scene.

Police are investigating.
