Photographer documents journey from Banff to Jasper nearly 100 years ago

Carole Harmon never met her grandfather, but she heard many stories about his iconic trip on horseback through the Columbia Icefields nearly a century ago.

"It made for very dramatic footage and film. Not something that has been done much since. You know it's pretty impractical taking horses on ice andglaciers," saidCarole Harmon.

Her grandfather set off from Banff to Jasper with five other adventurers, including National Geographic writer Lewis Freeman. They carried three months supply of food and travelled on hunter and trapper trails. Byron Harmon documented his trip with a 5x7 camera and 35-mm movie camera.

An exhibit of Byron Harmon's images, film, lantern and stereo-slides is on until March 29at the Whyte Museum in Banff as part of the Exposure Photography Festival.
