Calgary police join with RCMP to tackle city's gun violence

The guns and gangs unit of the Calgary Policeis hoping a new partnership with the RCMP's weapons team will help to reduce violence in the city.

"They have a program, they've always had it, called NWESTwhich stands for National Weapons Enforcement Support Team. So we've brought that unit in to our unit to work a little more closely," saidStaff Stg. Quinn Jacques of the Guns and Gangs Unit.

The CPS says analysis shows about 30 per cent of the guns seized come from the U.S. It says the rest are likely taken during break and enters, specifically targeted for firearms.

"We've also looked at joining the RCMP in a western Canadian firearms trafficking group to look at the source of the guns," Jacques said.

So far this year there have been at least 91 shootings compared to 54 in all of last year.
