Calgary tickets some cul-de-sac angle parkers, but not all

Cul-de-sacs, crescents, keyholes.

Call them what you want, butthe City of Calgary doesn't want residents angle parking on them.

That's the answer one councillor got when he asked why some residents in his ward are getting tickets.

Coun. Sean Chu says for years, the residents on a cul-de-sac in Huntington Hills have been angleparking vehicles at the end of their street.

But recently, $50 tickets were handed out to drivers for doing just that.

The parking bylaw says all vehicles must be parallel parked, but Chu questions why tickets were issued.

"It doesn't make sense," Chu said.

"You just don't have enough space, green space in between houses with driveways to park vehicles parallel to the sidewalk."

The city's transportation general manager says someone in the area must have been unhappy with angle parking because it's not a big priority on the parking enforcement list.

"Generally it's not enforced," Mac Logan said.

"It's on a complaint basis. Technically, it is against the bylaw unless specifically signed."

Logan says neighbours can petition the city for signs to allow angle parking.

Chu says he's going to see if there's a way to get the bylaw relaxed for all cul-de-sacs, which would be a cheaper way to allow angle parking.
