Suspect in fatal Calgary clinic stabbing charged with 1st-degree murder

Police have charged a 42-year-oldCalgary man with first-degree murder in connection with afatal stabbing at a Chinese wellness centre on Thursday.

Officers were called to the Perpetual Wellness Chinese Medical Centre in the Central Landmark building at2:35 p.m. where they found acupuncturist TiejunHuang, 51, stabbed to death.

The suspect, who had remained at the scene,was treated at the scene for minor injuries and then taken into custody.

He has been identified as Jin Qing Huang. Police say while he and the victim share a surname, they are not related.

Huang, who has no prior offences,is set to appear in court on June 20.

Insp. Don Coleman said investigators believe the attack was motivated by the accused's belief that his wife was involved in an inappropriate relationship with the doctor.

"It would appear that the accusedwanted to confront the doctor," he said.

The wife was at the clinic at the time of the attack, Coleman added, and it appears the accused knew she would be there.

Another woman in her 50s also suffered minor injuries "during the chaos of the event," Coleman said, but she is not believed to have been an intended target.

"It seemed like this individual was fairly motivated and focused on the doctorhimself," Coleman said.

Huang, who studied in Beijing and specialized in sports medicine, owned the wellness centre.

Former Alberta MLA Teresa Woo-Paw knew the victimwell.

"It was shocking," she said.

"He was very enthusiastic about getting involved in various community initiatives."
