The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) says approximately 55,000 workers in its urban and rural bargaining units are on strike. Both the union and Canada Post say progress in negotiations has been slow, leaving businesses and consumers to fret as busy shopping and holiday periods loom.

A Calgary judge offered words of encouragement to a man heading to prison following a conviction for impaired driving that caused the death of a pedestrian.

Derek Nicholas Kwasney was handed a year in jail and a $106,000 fine for failing to pay taxes on money he embezzled from the resort. Those penalties come just weeks after he was sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison and a $669,000 fine for a fraud conviction.
