Calgary crash victims were uncle, nephew

One of the two men killed Wednesdayin a fiery Calgary crash after refusing to stop for police had previous run-ins with authorities, court records show.

Byron Gray, 29, and his nephew, Ryan Gray, 18, were killedearlyWednesday when theJeep they were in crashed into a northeast bunglow and burst into flames.

Minutes earlier, Const. Jens Lind had tried to pull the SUV over but the Jeep sped away, according to authorities.

Byron Gray was charged in 2007 with two counts of breaking and entering, two counts of car theft and one count of obstructing a police officer, according to court documents. He had recently completed a three-year sentence and was the driver of the Jeep. Hedied at the scene of the crash.

Amateur video shot by a neighbour shows Lind was able to pull Ryan Gray, who was a front passenger, out of the burning vehicle about four minutes after arriving on the scene. The teen died later in hospital.

John Dooks, head of the Calgary Police Association, said the officer followed proper protocol when faced with a personal risk as well as a hazardous vehicle fire that could release toxic gases or cause an explosion.

There was no pursuit but the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT)is in charge of the investigation because of the police involvement before the crash.The civilian agency handles death or injury cases involving the actions of police officers.

Officials at Heritage Park issued a statement about Ryan Gray, who once worked part-time at the historical village: "Our condolences go out to his family for their loss."

A woman livingin the home that the SUV crashed into, and a Calgary police officer, were treated for minor injuries.
