Calgary dog groomer charged with animal cruelty

The Calgary Humane Society, along with Calgary police, have charged a woman in connection with an alleged animal abuse incident that was caught on video this past June.

The Calgary Humane Society, along with Calgary police, charged a woman in connection with an alleged animal abuse incident that was caught on video in June.

Mariko Dormer faces five counts of causing an animal to be in distressunder the Animal Protection Act and three counts of causing unnecessary pain, suffering or injury to an animalunder the Criminal Code.

Brad Nichols, the HumaneSociety's manager for animal cruelty investigations, says it's rare for someone to be charged under the Criminal Code.

"We investigate a lot of abuse concerns, or allegations at least," he said."It's fairly unique that you have such compelling video evidence along with all of the other witness statements."

Dormeris expected to appearin court Oct. 8.

Fur Kids Daycare, thegroomingcompany that Dormer worked for, has since shut down.
