7 Calgary residents facing dozens of drug-related charges

A massive drug trafficking investigation by police and RCMP has resulted in seven Calgary residents facing 56 charges but police say it could be just the tip of the iceberg.

A massive drug trafficking investigation by police and RCMP has resulted in seven Calgary residents facing 56 charges but police say it could be just the tip of the iceberg.

The Alberta Law Enforcement Response Teams (ALERT) said Thursday three search warrants resulted in the arrests between Aug. 24 and Aug. 30.

"ALERT's investigation targeted street-level drug sales in the city with quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine being seized," the agency said in a release.

"ALERT believes these individuals are part of a larger criminal organization and more charges and arrests are expected in the coming weeks."

Cocaine, methamphetamine, suspected vialsof gamma-Hydroxybutyric acid, ammunition, three vehicles and $10,000 inproceeds of crime were seized, police said.

Charges have been laid against a 19-year-old male, a 23-year-old male, a 26-year-old male, a 32-year-old male, a 40-year-old male, a 41-year-old male and a 25-year-old female.

The charges include drug trafficking, possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of proceeds of crime and breach of probation.

Police are reminding the public to get in touch with their local police force or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they suspect drug activity in their area.
