Here are five things to do in Calgary this weekend for the kids, the film connoisseurs, the historians and everyone in between.

A blast from the past, Bjork for kids and Year of the Monkey acrobatics are all up this weekend

Asia is ushering in the Year of the Rooster (Hai Fu Lei)

It's that time again time to put the worries and troubles of your week aside and start planning your weekend. These are five things you won't want to miss, as highlighted bythe Homestretch's Tracy Fuller.

1. Tour Calgary as it was in the 1890s

The exhibit's photographs show unexpected perspectives on daily life, from a tennis match in January to Chinese cultural activities. (Glenbow Archives)

Here's an opportunity to witness Calgary as you've probably never seen it before.

"Herein We Dwell: Unexpected Images of Calgary in the 1890s" offers arare glimpse into the everyday life of the city throughhistorical images of early neighbourhoods and people.

Visitors can snap selfies at an historic photo booth featuring images from the exhibit and enter their photos in an Instagram contest with thehashtag #1890syyc.

The exhibitwascurated by Peter Duthie, founder of Folio Gallery, former Exposure Photography Festivalchair, and educator.

2. For the kids - Puppetry and ELSKA

Marketed as "Bjork for Kids," ELSKAisa children's performer from Iceland who frolics on the tundra in multi-coloured costumes with animated friends.

Elska enchants with fun lyrics and a catchy techno-pop sound, interwoven with story-telling that will enchant parents and children alike.

When:Feb. 6 and 7 at the Martha Cohen Theatre at Arts Common

Also happening this weekend, puppetry meets live orchestra in theCalgary Pro Musica's production of "Marita and her Heart's Desire."

It's a magical, mysterious and humorousstory of a little girl who believes the moon can grant her heart's desire. She sets off to meet the moon and on her way, shemeets a slinky cat, a no-nonsense rat, a jaunty dog and a helpful mousewho all join her on her journey.

The show features hand-made puppetsincluding Green Fools Star "Bella the Dog" anda 15-piece ensemble with Canadian violinist Scott St. John and conductor Claude Lapalme,from the Red Deer Symphony Orchestra.

3. Canada's Top Ten Film Festival

Each of the films in this festival was eitherdirected by a Canadian citizen or resident, include Canada as an official country of production, or played at a major film festival in Canada last year.

The featureand short-film selections are each chosen by a panel of filmmakers and industry professionals from across Canada.

A familiar favourite returning to the big screen is theOmar Khadr documentary"Guantanamo's Child," which won theaudience pickat Calgary's 2015 festival.

4. Peking Acrobats

The Yearof the Sheep is coming to a close and the year of the Monkey begins Feb. 8.

To mark the occasion, the Calgary Philharmonichas put together a specialpresentation of the Peking Acrobats. Think Cirque de Soleil,only more mystical and rooted in a tradition.

This full-on stage performance troupe includes contortionists, jugglers, trick-cyclists and gymnasts who will perform plate-spinning, hoop-diving, one-handed balancing, candle contortion and a high chair actwith traditional Chinese orchestral accompaniment.

When: Feb. 6 at 8 p.m. at the Jack Singer Concert Hall

5. New Year Carnival Show

Continuing with the theme of the Lunar New Year, the Calgary Chinese Cultural Centrehostsits Grand New Year Carnival Show this Sunday.

It featurestraditional dragon and lion dances, martial arts demonstrations, food, games, lucky draws,an indoor bazaar and a meet and greet with the God of Fortune.Make sure to drop by the CBC Calgary booth to get your own kid's lunar new year dragon craft!

This ispart of a four-weekend celebration to ring in the Lunar New Year.
