Festivals, murals, Calgary Pride and more: Calgary entertainment this weekend

The Labour Day long weekend is fast approaching, which means it's a good time to get out and enjoy the last bit of summer.

If you're looking for something to keep you entertained, the CalgaryHomestretch's Susan Holzman has a few ideas to keep you busy.

Family friendly singalong

The Calgary Men's Chorus is hosting a family friendly singalong to The Greatest Showman, a 2017 musical film based on the life of P.T.Barnum, who was the founder of the Barnum and Bailey Circus.

The film stars Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams and Zac Efron, and the singalong goes Friday starting at 7 p.m. at the Globe Theatre. Circus attire is encouraged.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

As part of Pride celebrations, the Calgary Underground Film Festival, Calgary Queer Arts Society and Hole in the Wall Studios are presenting the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

That also goes at the Globe Theatre on Sunday with doors opening at 10:30 p.m., a pre-show at 11:30 p.m. and the film starts at midnight.

And this is definitely an interactive event, audience involvement is encouraged as are costumes and you can buy props packages at the theatre.

Calgary Pride

The Calgary Pride Parade is on Sunday starting at 11 a.m.

The parade is now in its 28th year and according to the Calgary Pride website, started as "a small march of LGBT Calgarians, some of whom wore masks and bags over their faces to protect themselves from persecution."

The event has grown over the last few decades and is now the second biggest parade in Calgary behind only the Stampede Parade and it's definitely the most colourful events in our city

The parade route will start at 3rdStreet S.E. and run west along 6th Avenue, turning north at 6th Street S.W. and ending at 3rdAvenue S.W.

Beltline Urban Mural Project

It's a chance to see one-of-a-kind works of art on buildings throughout the Beltline.

There's 11 murals being worked on, with one of the most noticeable a seven-storey mountain lion.

Artist talks will be held Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. at the McHugh House (1515 Centre Street S.) and an alley party is planned on Saturday from 2 to 10 p.m. at 1235 10th Avenue S.W., which will include mural tours.

Fiesta Filipino

There is no shortage of festivals taking place this weekend, including Fiesta Filipino, a street party celebrating Filipino arts, culture and heritage, going Friday to Sunday at Olympic Plaza. The event will include exhibits, songs, sport, dancing and of course, food.

BBQ on the Bow

You may want to have a barbecue with a bunch of other people andif that's the case, BBQ on the Bow is on this weekend at the Montgomery Community Association and Shouldice Park (5003 16th Avenue N.W.)

It's a barbecue competition and festival that spreads the joy of grilling. You can learn some secret recipes from the competitors and it's a chance to celebrate local businesses. Barbecue food trucks will be on site, and you can enjoy local musicians, including Calgary band Three Finger Shot on Friday night.

Rock the Junction

It's a great way to celebrate Labour Day on Monday with music and food trucks in the East Village.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the East Village Junction, 439 8th Avenue S.E.

Bands performing include the Love Bullies, the Ashley Hundred, the Torchettesand Windigo.
