Family Day activities: free, fun and family-friendly

Dig through history, challenge your kids to a round of puzzle-solving, break out the fishing gear and sharpen those skates. Here's a roundup of things the whole family can enjoy this long weekend.

Historic re-enactments, road races and permit-free fishing on offer this Monday

You may not have to work thisMonday, but that's no excuse to stay at home all day.There's way too much stuff happening in the city.

Here's a roundup of some special events you and the kids won't want to miss.

1.Family Quest

Gasoline Alley at Heritage Park is hosting a Family Day weekend filled with motorcycle inspired fun and excitement. (Heritage Park)

Awaken the family's road warrior spirit with a variety ofmotorcycle-inspired fun and games. There are jobs for the littlest of mechanics to the speediest of road racers.

Parents and kids can designcustom motorcycling goggles, race around a track, hustle to repair a broken down bikeand more.

When: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gasoline Alley Museum

2.Winter Carnival

Here's your chance to dress your kids up as Mounties and watch them deliver their best lines from the big stage.

Fort Calgary is hosting its Winter Carnival a day filled with fun family activities rooted in history.

Grab some sweets from a Quebecois sugar shack and sit down to hear sometraditional Blackfoot winter stories, or try your hand at a dreamcatcher-making workshop.

When: 10a.m. to4p.m. at Fort Calgary

3. Free Family Skate

In addition to the always free Olympic Plaza, you'll find free skating at a number of City of Calgary arenas as well as the Olympic Oval this Family Day Monday. (Getty Images)

Some of the best athletes in Canada and from around the world train at the Olympic Oval, and you can cut a line down "the fastest ice in the world" forfree this Monday.

Make sure you bring a helmet, it's mandatory for skating.

The Tim Horton's Truck will be on site, serving up hot beverages to warm you from the inside out.

When: Noon to 5 p.m. at the University of Calgary's Olympic Oval

4. Free Fishing Weekend

This weekend is one of just two free fishing weekends the province hosts every year. Regular catch rules still apply, so make sure you brush up on what's allowed and what's not. (Getty Images)

It only happens twice a year, and it's happening now. This is your chance to take the whole familyfishing, and you won't even need a license.

The province hasmore than 160stocked water bodies for anglers to enjoy, with amplebrook trout, brown trout or cutthroat trout. You canview current stocking reports here.

National parks aren't included, and regular rules still apply, so make sure you brush up on what you can catch and what you can keep.

5. The Military Museums

The Military Museums is offering two-for-one admission on Family Day. (The Military Museums)

Take advantage of two-for-one admission at the Military Museums.

Seize this rare opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes as you watch the ongoing restoration of a special artifact: a German field artillery gun from 1915, captured by the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

You can also walk through First World War history and explore your own family's connection to Canada's military.

When: 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at The Military Museums
