Man found dead in downtown Calgary apartment fire

Arson investigators and the medical examiner are probing a fire in a 16th-floor unit of a downtown apartment building where a man was found deceased.

No 911 calls were made despite heavy smoke damage and evidence of significant fire

Arson investigators and the medical examinerare probing a fire in a 16th-floor unit of a downtown apartment building where a man was found deceased.

EMS were called to the building in the 900 block of 9 Ave. S.W. just before 11 a.m. Friday by a neighbour asking them to check on the welfare of the person inside the unit. Paramedicsarrived to find a deceased man believed to be in his 60s and heavy smoke damage throughout the suite.

Police and fire crews were called and a search showed there had been a significant fire recently.

Initial checks led investigators to believe the fire was accidental, however the investigation continues. An autopsy on the man is scheduled for this coming week.

Officials will also belooking into the status of the building's fire alarms as no 911 calls were made regarding the blaze.
