Calgary firefighters issue warning after fatal house fire

Calgary fire officials are going door-to-door in Evergreen warning people to be prepared after a deadly house fire in the neighbourhood.

Calgary fire officials are going door-to-door in Evergreen warning people to be prepared after a deadly house fire in the neighbourhood.

Firefighters will be remindingneighbours in Evergreento be aware of how to prevent fires, have working smoke alarms and emergency exit plans.

Calgary has seen about a dozen serious fires this year, with threeinvolving fatalities.

In the most recent, fire crews were called to a home in the 100 block of Evergreen Way S.W. around 10:55 p.m. MT Saturday. They later found a body in the basement. The victim's name has not been released.

"If we can give people the information on how to prevent them, ensure people have working smoke alarms, that they have a home escape planthey can hopefully get out safely," said Carol Henke, a community safety officer with the Calgary Fire Department.
