Calgary Halloween experts say Suicide Squad characters will be huge this year, but with all the hullabaloo down south, The Donald is also coming up trumps.

Here are your Top 5 costumes, according to The Costume Shoppe and Chuckles Unlimited:

  • Harley Quinn (Suicide Squad)
  • Pikachu (of the Pokemon Go craze)
  • The Joker (Suicide Squad)
  • Donald Trump
  • Harry Potter

"Harley Quinn is popular every year, but this year more so just because of the Suicide Squad [movie]," says Bernadette Fletcher, owner of Chuckles Unlimited, which has operated across from Chinook Mall for the past 30 years.

In case you somehow missed it (like many of us in the newsroom), Suicide Squad is a newly-released superhero film based on the DC Comics anti-hero team of the same name.

Filmed in Toronto, the movie has grossed over $744 million US worldwide since its August debut despite sketchy reviews.

According to Frightgeist, a site created by GoogleTrends, Harley Quinn is also the No. 1 searched costume in the U.S. this year.

Despite the Harley-mania, another Calgary expert says Donald Trump is also doing well.

"He's in the news, so he's quite popular," says RyanSchoelof The Costume Shoppe, a 40-year-old family-runbusiness at 42nd & Blackfoot in S.E. Calgary.

"That's just basically a mask and a lot of orange makeup," he adds.
