Calgary Humane Society seizures of cats, birds results in reduced adoption fees

Charges are pending against the owners of 27 birds and 35 cats after investigators took the animals from two Calgary homes.

In the last two weeks, peace officers confiscatedthe animals, which arenow housed at the Calgary Humane Society.

The shelter is so overcrowded, the society is offering reduced adoption fees in November on all cats that are older than seven months, as well as some birds.

The society has been consistently over capacity this year after record-breaking seizures.

"What is unusual about these two recent hoarding situations is the social quality of the animals removed," said animal cruelty investigator, Brad Nichols.

Normally, animals taken in large groups are feral and inbred with major medical intervention needed, according to Nichols.

These two groups, though, seem to be well-adjusted and the humane society expects they willmake good house pets once their treatable medical issues are taken care of.

"If a potential adopter ever wanted to offer a new loving home to an animal at the core of an animal cruelty investigation, now is a great time to come in," said Nichols.
