Calgary mom tells police about putting baby in dumpster

A mother's tearful interviewwith policefroma hospital bedjusthours after her newborn wasfound by the fatherinnorthwest dumpster was played in a Calgary courtroom today.

Meredith Katharine Borowiec faces an attempted murder chargefor the 2010 incident, whichgoes to trial later this year.

She iscurrently on trial forsecond-degree murder chargesin the death of two babiesthatprosecutors say were born to her in 2008 and 2009.

It is alleged both babies died shortly after they were born and their bodies were never recovered.

Prosecutors are trying to link the 2010 incident toBorowiec's currentdouble murder trial as "similar fact evidence," which means giving the facts of prioractions of the accusedfor the purpose ofproving the misconduct at issue.

Police interview describes graphic details

Borowiec said in the policeinterview played in courtthat she didn't know she was pregnant.

She said shegave birth in bathroom and the baby ended up in the toilet.

Borowiec told police she cut the umbilical cord, wrapped the baby in a towel and two separate bags and then tossed it into a dumpster outside her house.

She said she was scared of facing "the reality of the situation" after giving birth in thebathroom.

Borowiec says she thought the baby was dead when she tossed it into the garbage bin, and says she would have done things differently.

But while she said she didn't think the baby was alive, she also told police she wasn't surprisedit survived after it was rescued.

CBC Newshas learned shegave birth againin July while she was in custody at the Southern Alberta Forensic Psychiatric Centre. The baby boy was given up for adoption.
