Calgary names new police chief

A former deputy chief of the Calgary Police Service was named as the city's new chief Monday.

A former deputy chief of the Calgary Police Service was named as the city's new chiefMonday.

Rick Hanson will replace retiring police chief Jack Beaton in October.

Hanson left the Calgary Police Service several years ago to join the Alberta RCMP, where he iscurrently the deputy commissioner.

Calgary city council unanimously approved Hanson's appointment at its meeting Monday.

Ald. Madeleine King said the appointment is good news.

"I think all of us know Rick Hanson really well and that makes us enthusiastic because we know what a quality person we have coming into this role," she said in an interview shortly after the appointment was announced.
