Calgary police dog dies 1 month before retirement

A Calgary police dog has died after nearly seven years on the force in patrol and drug detection roles, just one month before retirement.

"Max was an extremely social and affectionate German shepherd who loved to meet everyone," Calgary police said Monday in social media posts toTwitter and Facebook.

"Max will be greatly missed by those that knew him, especially his partner and his family."

Max was eight years old.

"His proficiency as a drug detection dog was certainly his best strength as a working dog, being recognized during the 2018 Canadian Police Canine Championships, where he placed first nationally in two categories," police said.

Calgary police dogs have gained a social following since the force created an Instagram page in June of last year.

Max was the first dog featured.

He was also featured in the 2020 Canine Heroes calendar.

Calgary police could not confirm the dog's cause of death to CBC News late Monday.
