Calgary's public school board has a new superintendent.

Naomi Johnson, who joined theCalgary Board of Education as a teacher in 1980, was chosen for the job after aNorth America-widesearch. She was most recentlythe school board'sacting deputy chief superintendent

Johnson takes over the job in August from Brendan Croskery, who is retiring.

She said Tuesday that she wants to raise the bar when it comes to education in the city.

"We have some schools that we've set priorities around to raise the levels of achievement there, so the challenge will be to mobilize the employees of this organizationwho dedicate every day to the children of the system," she said.
