Teenage boy charged with accidentally shooting his sister

Police say a teenage boy was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he picked up a handgun he didn't know was loaded and shot his sister.

The teenage brother of a woman shot at a southeast residence on Saturday has been charged with numerous firearms offences.

Police say the 17-year-old boy was under the influence of drugs and alcohol when he picked up a handgun that was unknowingly loaded and fired, hitting his sister.

Emergency officials said over the weekend the woman was 25-years-old but police clarified on Monday to say she is 24.

The teen who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act is charged with careless use of a firearm, pointing a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm, and knowing possession of a weapon with no registration certificate.

Police were called to a home in the 1900 block of 30th Street S.E. just before 9:30 p.m. Saturday for reports of a shooting.The woman was rushed to hospital, initially in life-threatening condition, but she was later upgraded to serious but stable.
