Calgary Sled Island a hit with fans, artists

Another Sled Island is in the books and by most accounts, it lived up to its reputation.

The five-day music and arts festival brings together about 250 bands and artists performing for tens of thousands of fans.

PerformerJohnny de Courcy,when asked how Sled Island compared to other festivals, responded without hesitation.

"It doesn't compare," de Courcy said."This is the best festival in the world because the artists get treated so well."

He said there is real diversity in the acts.

"Really good shows. Some of the best shows I have ever seen in Calgary."

Fellow musician Laura Bardsley said the multiple venues gave the festival a feel all its own.

"I like how many venues it incorporates. I like how you have to run around a little bit and how it is a little overwhelming," Bardsley explained.

"I really, really like how absolutely happy and nice everyone is to each other because they'reall just so excited to be around."

Doug Waite has performed at previous festivals but this year was just taking it all in.

"It is a great festival," he said.

"You meet friendly people, you meet people that want to enjoy the music and get to know each other."

Waite said the idea that Sled is just for younger people, is inaccurate.

"It is not. It is great music. It is people that have the energy and maybe a little bit of time to pursue it. So that is a good thing."

Festival organizer Maud Salvi said each year, the feedback improves and gets more creative.

"I am tired but I am really, really happy. It has been a great festival. The feedback has been amazing," she said.

"We've had feedback like, 'This show was life changing,' or people cried. That is exactly what we hoped to accomplish with the festival," Salvi said.

"It is emotional for some people."
