Slick roads lead to bumper-to-bumper morning traffic in Calgary

The roads were interrible shape and traffic wasslow all over Calgary on Friday morning, after the city saw six centimetres of snow overnight and it kept falling all morning.

The city remainedunder an Environment Canada snowfall warning until early Friday afternoon, and police said the slippery roads contributed to91 collisions between midnight and noon on Friday, 13of them involving injuries.

The City of Calgary said crews were out through the night plowing and spreading gravel on the major routes.

Policeclosed a section of Shaganappi Trail from John Laurie Boulevard to Country Hills Boulevard during the Friday morning commute because of the slippery conditions.

CBC listeners toldThe Calgary Eyeopener that traffic was also crawling on other key routes during the morning commute, including Crowchild Trail and Glenmore Trail, with slippery hills causing many spinouts.

Eastbound traffic along the Bow River was bumper-to-bumper from ParkdaleBoulevard all the way back to BownessRoad at ShaganappiTrailat about 8 a.m.

Calgary Transit said many buseswererunning late orneeded to detour.

The city does not anticipate calling a snow route parking ban.

Police reminded motorists not to leave their vehicles running with the keys inside, tweeting that sevenunlocked and running cars were stolen in a two-hour period Friday.
