Halfway through this year's street cleanup, parking fines far eclipse 2018 level

Already 35,000 tickets have been issued by the Calgary Parking Authority for people not moving their cars to allow the cleanup to take place.

The Calgary Parking Authority has issued 35,000 tickets so far this year and towed 687 vehicles

As street sweeping crews continue to roll through Calgary, so too do the parking crews issuing an eye-popping number of tickets.

The cleanup is only halfway done, but already 35,000 tickets have been issued by the Calgary Parking Authority (CPA) for people not moving their cars to allow the cleanup to take place.

If everyone pays their $80 fine on time, that's about $2.8 million in penalties. Payments after 10 days are $90 and after 30 days it's $120.

In 2018, just over 12,000 tickets were issued for the entire seasonal cleanup.

Where the parking crews are slowing down is in towing.

So far in 2019, the CPA says 687 vehicles have been moved by tow trucks, while 2,100 were towed in 2018.

Street sweeping is slated to wrap by the end of June.
