The city's street sweeping program is set to resume in Calgary's residential areas on Tuesday after heavy snowfall onthe weekend forced crews to pause their spring work and the cleaning schedules might have changed.

The major spring storm dumped about 13 centimetres of snow in Calgary on Saturday, according to Environment Canada.

The snowcreated major traffic problems on some major routes in the city, leading to more than 100 collisions from 5 p.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Sunday.

Southern Alberta highways were also a mess, with emergency crews responding to stranded motorists and several accidents, including one on Highway 1 near Jumping Pound involving four tractor-trailers and 11 other vehicles.

Because the street cleaning schedules may have changed, residents are asked to watch for revised signs about their neighbourhood's sweeping dates.

Sweeping on major routes will resume Monday evening, while sweeping in residential areas is scheduled to resume Tuesday morning.

Vehicles must be moved off roadways during scheduled sweeping to avoid fines.

As of last week, Calgarians had racked up $1.9 million in parking fines in the first three weeks of street sweeping.
