It looks like the cost of taking a cabcould beon the way up in Calgary aftera council committee approved a 4.4 per cent hike in taxi fares Wednesday.

That will go to city council later this month, but it would be the first increase in cab fares in four years.

Marc Halat with the Taxi and Limousine Advisory Committee says the increase should provide a fair return to the industry, which has seen higher costs in recent years.

"Based on... the research we did, we provided a number to council that they supported and I'm pretty confident that's a number we're going to use and see going forward," he said.

Roger Richard with Associated Taxi says he's pleased with the increasebut says he asked for a hike that's even two per cent higher.

He says that would help cover additional costs being imposed by city hall for a new taxi meter system.
