Calgary breaks 119-year-old temperature record

According to the Environment Canada website, Calgary has set another weather record in 2016, hitting 27 C today, and besting 1897's high of 26.7 C.

A 119-year-old heat record fell in Calgary on May 3, 2016, a marked departure from wintery springs of the recent past.

According to the Environment Canada website,Calgary has set another weather record in 2016, hitting 27.2 C today, and besting 1897's high of 26.7 C.

Normally the high for this time of year is 15 C.

Temperatures across the province are well above seasonal and Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for every community in Alberta.

People are reminded to keep hydrated, dress appropriately and spend at least a few hours in the day in a cool place.

"Everyone is at risk from heat, especially older adults; infants and young children; and people with chronic illnesses," reads the advisory.

The heat wave is expected to continue Wednesdaywith a high of 28C in the forecast, which will come close to the previous record of 28.3 C.

Things are expected to cool down towards the end of the week, bringing temperatures to just above seasonal norms.

This isn't the first time this year that Calgary has broken decades-old temperature records, with a 90-year-old record fallingin February, with a high of 15 C..

On April 19,1910,the mercury in Calgary climbed to26.7 C, according to Environment Canada. This year,we broke that 106-year-old record hitting27.1 C.

Records started being collected for the area in 1885.
