Calgary tobogganing: City looks for more legal hill options

If you like to follow the letter of the law while soaring down a snow-covered hill, you may soon have a few more safe places to sled.

Calgary city councilwants to make more legal tobogganing locations.

The city is willing to legalize other areas of city, as there are only 18 approved sites right now.

Mayor NaheedNenshisays there is a lack of approved areas in the suburbs of the city.

"The 18 approved areas tend to be in built-up areas of the city, largely because we haven't looked at new neighbourhoods," he said.

A city officialmade it clear no tickets have ever been issued for illegal tobogganing.

Coun.Shane Keating says there is a reason why some areas are approved and why some are not. He knows of some hills that are dangerous. He encouraged city officials to make some changes.

"We need to have some clarification," said Keating. "The bylaw is quite old."

Nenshitook some time to defend the current bylaw.

"We live in the Prairies, there are not that many hills," he said. "So it's not like there are millions and millions of hills that we are saying you cannot go sledding on."
