Bighorn sheep researcher got disoriented after encountering bears

A Calgary woman is safe at home after spending a cold, rainy night lost in Kananaskis Country.

The 23-year-old was doing research on bighorn sheep west of Turner Valley at Windy Point Ridge on Sunday when she encountered bears.

She became disoriented as she moved to safety.

The woman managed to call 911, telling dispatchers she was lost. Officials then lost phone contact with her.

Conservation officers and volunteer crews were unable to find her on Sunday night as they searched in heavy rain and driving wind.

A helicopter spotted the woman on Monday at 10:30 a.m. and she was rescued.

She had mild hypothermia but no serious injuries, RCMP said.
