Calgary Zoo's otter Logan dies in 'tragic incident'

A 12-year-old otter has died at the Calgary Zoo, officials said, leaving three remaining otters in the Canadian Wilds exhibit.

A 12-year-old otter has died at the Calgary Zoo, officials said, leaving three remaining otters in the Canadian Wilds exhibit.

"We are sad to report thatLogan has passed away," the zoo said in a statement.

Logan was seen struggling in the pool around 11 a.m. Thursday.A zoo keeper jumped into the pool, but the male river otter did not survive.

"This is a very tragic incident that we are all trying to cope with," the zoo's curator Colleen Baird said, asking for patience while they investigate the death.

The average lifespan of a river otter in the wild iseight to nine years.

The remaining otters are a one-year-old male called Finnegan, a 12-year-old femaleCharlotte and 16-year-old male Callebaut.

The Cequel Lodge in the Canadian Wilds where the otter habitat is located will remain open, the zoo said.
