If you go out to the woods, mind the cranky elk.

Spring time means more baby animals in Alberta's Bow Valley and experts are warning that elk are particularly dangerous right now as the females are calving.

If you get too close, they could charge at you.

"At least in in two cases, we've had contact made," said Jay Honeyman, a human-wildlife expert for Alberta Environment and Parks.

"In one case a woman got knocked to the ground by the elk, so that's very concerning. These are big animals and when they get aggressive, it can be quite a scary situation for people that are having those interactions."

The calving season starts in May and ends by July.

Until then, experts say be aware of your surroundings, stay away from elk calves, keep your dogs leashed and carry bear spray.
