Canada Post investigating community mailboxes left open in Taradale

Residents in the northeast Calgary community of Taradale were surprised to find their mailboxes wide open on Thursday night and they're not happy about it.

Residents in the northeast Calgary community of Taradale were surprised to find their mailboxes wide open on Thursday night and they're not happy about it.

The first report to Canada Post customer service that a community mailbox near Tararidge Close N.E. was left open came in at6:04 p.m. M.T.

Canada Post dispatched staff to take care of it, and it was inspected and closed by8 p.m.

A second call about the same mailbox came in at8:56 p.m. Staff were sent out within thehour to inspect and close the mailbox, and Calgary police were called.

Canada Post says it appearsno mail was missing ortampered with, even thought the mail was left unsecured.

Some residents say they are worried their mail or parcels may have been taken.

Calgary police say there are currently no reports of mail theft, but if someone believes they were a victim they should file a report.

It's still unknown how the community mailbox came to be left open, but Canada Post says itdoes have a process to dispatch staff to secure theboxes as quickly as possible.

"We try to have our eyes and ears everywhere, there is a 24-hour national control centre that monitors all aspects of our operation to make sure the mail is secure," saidAnickLosierwith Canada Post

Canada Post says incidents like this are rare, andthere is aninternal investigation underway.

Losier says they will talk to the delivery person if there was anything suspicious or if someoneforgot to turn the key properly.
