Expanded cancer centre in High River opens

The cancer centre in High River is now six times bigger with the completion of a major renovation.

The cancer centre in High River is now six times bigger with the completion of a major renovation.

The HighRiverCommunity Cancer Clinic is now 2,400 square feet and has more comfortable and welcoming treatment areas for its clients, Alberta Health Services said in a release.

Thecentre has been operating since 1998 as a satellite clinic of Calgary's Tom Baker Cancer Centre, providing about160 treatments per month, including chemotherapy, transfusions and blood level monitoring.

The Rotary Club ofHighRiver raised $1.6 million to renovate and expand the existing facility earlier this year.

"Today is a celebration of the generosity of our communities. It is a celebration of people who truly want to make a difference in people's lives.We are so grateful to the Rotary Club ofHighRiverand all the many, many individuals, businesses and service clubs who were part of making today's opening a reality," said Michael Brown, executive director of theHighRiver District Health Foundation.

The new clinic has six treatment chairs, a designated exam room, a nutrition centre and private space for physician consultations with patients and families.

High River is about 65 kilometres south of Calgary.
