Canmore water treatment plant gets $1.6M for water treatment

Canmore is getting almost $1.6 million from the Alberta government to support upgrades to its wastewater treatment system.

Canmoreis getting almost $1.6 million from the Alberta government to support upgrades to its wastewater treatment system.

Work is alreadyunderway to makethe plant more efficient, while resulting in cleaner water at the end of the process. The final cost of the project will be $5 million.

"You know you're trying to balance the functionality of building a successful community without allowing the debt to increase to the point where it's just not sustainable," said Canmore Mayor John Borrowman.

"So this sort of partnership from the provincial government is really, really important."

Budget investment

The money is part of$595 million set aside in the 2016 provincial budget for water and wastewater infrastructure improvement projects in small towns and rural Alberta over the next five years.

Canmore is amongthe first recipients, with $117 million being doled out in this first round of funding.

"This investment will build on an impressive list of projects to improve access to safe, reliable water supplies and wastewater solutions, particularly in small towns and rural Alberta, where it is needed most," said GordEdwards, the executive director of the Alberta Water Council in a government media release.
