Police have shut down a large-scale cannabis grow-opin northeast Calgary.

On Friday, officers with the strategic enforcement unit carried out a search warrant on a house in the 100 block of Bedfield Court N.E., where they found more than 1,100 plants worth an estimated $1.38 million, police said in a release Monday.

No one was at the house when police arrived to search it.

The house had electrical, HVAC, plumbing and structural modifications to accommodate the illegal cannabis production, police say.

Equipment worth about $20,000 was also found at the house.

Alberta Health Services and the City of Calgary have declared the residence uninhabitable.

"Large-scale grow-ops like this pose an immense risk to the health and welfare of the occupants and neighbours," said Staff Sgt. Kyle Grant.

"Homes that have alterations made to their electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems pose an extreme fire hazard and we've seen the deadly consequences in our city before."

The investigation is continuing, police say.
