Man charged after allegedly threatening Cardston peace officer with knife

RCMP in Cardston, Alta., have laid charges against a 24-year-old who allegedly threatened a community peace officer with a knife outside the detachment on New Year's Eve.

Cardstonis about 230 kilometres south of Calgary.

Brenden Kurt Eagle Speaker, a resident of Standoff, Alta.,faces multiple charges. The include four counts of assault with a weapon on a police officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, resisting arrestand failing to comply with a probation order.

The incident took place outside the detachment in Cardston at about6 p.m. on Tuesday.

The unarmed peace officer was confronted as he was leaving the detachment, according to a release,but made it to his patrol vehicle, where he used his cellphone to call RCMPofficers inside the building.

The Mounties confronted the man at gunpoint. He dropped the knife and fled.

RCMP officers pursued and arrested him after a "minor confrontation."

Eagle Speaker is set to appear in Cardston court on Monday.

No one was injured as a result of the incident.
